Long ago, in the soft hills north of Rome, there lived a man named Numa. He came from a people called the Sabines, and even as a young man he was known as the quietest in all the countryside. While other young men competed over who could run fastest or throw a spear farthest, Numa preferred to sit at his father's hearth and read, or to wander into the olive groves when twilight came. He spoke softly, and he listened a long time before he answered. The villagers said he had a soul built for stillness, as if the evening light itself had shaped him.
Numa married a gentle woman named Tatia, and for thirteen years they lived together on their small farm among the fig trees. But when Tatia died, Numa grew quiet in a new way. He left the village and moved out into the groves and fields that were consecrated to the gods. There he built himself a simple hut of woven branches, and there he lived with the bees and the goats and the shy deer. He rose before dawn to watch the sun paint the hills rose. He sat by the springs when the wind moved through the aspens. It was not grief that drew him out there, the villagers whispered. It was something else, something no one had words for.
Among all the groves there was one that Numa held dearest. It lay deep between the hills, where a spring flowed out of stone and gathered itself into a dark, clear pool. Cypresses stood around the water like silent guardians, and beneath them grew soft green moss that received his footsteps without a sound. In the evenings, when the moon rose, its silver lay across the water, and the whole grove breathed slowly, like a sleeping animal. Here Numa came when he wanted to think. Here he came also when he did not want to think at all, but only to sit and listen to the spring whispering to the stones. And it was here, one evening under the stars, that something happened that would change his life.
