High up in an old pine tree, where the needles smelled of warm resin, there lived a little baby owl. Her name was Uggla. Her feathers were as soft as tiny clouds. The moon peeked out from behind the forest. Now it was time to learn to whoo.
Beside Uggla sat her big brother. His name was Knut. Knut's whoo was deep and warm. It rolled out across the forest like a soft blanket. 'Now you try,' whispered Knut. Uggla nodded. She was little, but brave.
Uggla took a deep breath. She opened her beak. Out came… 'peep!' It sounded like a tiny toy. Knut smiled. 'That's a start,' he said. 'A star begins as a spark too.' Uggla laughed quietly.
'Breathe in the cool night,' whispered Knut. 'Smell the pine and the moss.' Uggla closed her eyes. She breathed slowly. The air tasted of resin and stars. Her chest grew warm, like a tiny oven.
She tried again. This time out came 'whoo… peep!' Half a hoot, half a squeak. A little hedgehog on the ground stopped and looked up. He looked rather surprised. Uggla laughed and hid her beak under her wing.
Knut chuckled softly. 'Good try,' he said. 'You don't have to push the sound. It comes from a warm place inside you.' He wrapped his big wing around her. Uggla felt safe. The forest was still.
Uggla tried again. 'Whoo-peep!' A little fox down in the bushes looked up. He pricked up his ears. Then he smiled, because it sounded so funny. He lay down in the moss and listened on.
'Close your eyes again,' said Knut. 'Think of something soft. Mama. The moss. Wings.' Uggla closed her eyes. She thought of Knut's warm wing. Inside her, everything grew quiet and gentle. Her chest swelled slowly.
She opened her beak very carefully. 'Whoo… whoo.' It came out soft. Like a small wind. It wasn't loud, but it was a real hoot. Uggla was so happy she almost lost her balance. Knut laughed quietly.
The hoot rolled out across the forest. It passed the pine trees. It passed the blueberry bush. It traveled all the way to a small lake, where a frog sat and listened. The frog stopped croaking. Everything went quiet.
