The Moon Rabbit

Read the beginning

On a clear night, the moon shone big and silvery over the forest. Slowly, slowly, the moon itself climbed down along a beam of silver light, dressed as a kind old traveller in a soft silver-grey cloak. He was tired and cold, and his voice was as quiet as a whisper. 'Dear animals of the forest,' he said, 'could someone help a little old traveller tonight?'

A small fox came padding through the moss. 'I will help you,' she said softly, and ran to the stream and fetched a shining fresh fish. Soon a monkey came swinging down from the treetops. 'Here, kind traveller,' she said, 'I have ripe peaches from the tall tree.' The old man smiled warmly at his two kind friends.

In a little burrow beside a big stone lived a soft little rabbit named Lova. She looked in her bowl, but it was empty. 'I have nothing to give,' Lova whispered sadly. Then she took her warm fur blanket and spread it over the old traveller, and invited him into her cosy little burrow to rest. The old man blinked with shining eyes, for Lova's kindness warmed him all the way into his heart.
